Come Hail or High Winds: Inspecting for Roof Damage After a Storm

Come Hail or High Winds: Inspecting for Roof Damage After a Storm

Extreme weather can cause all kinds of problems for homeowners. In a place like Colorado where the weather can change at the drop of a hat, it’s especially important to be aware of how it can affect your roof.

Many homeowners have no idea what to look for when it comes to inspecting for roof damage. Until there’s a gaping hole in their ceiling, they might have no idea that something is wrong.

To avoid finding yourself in this position, keep reading. Listed below are some tips that will help you spot damage so you can get repairs taken care of as soon as possible.

Check for Signs of Hail Damage

When it comes to hail damage, Colorado is currently the country’s reigning champion. More people file claims related to hail damage here than anywhere else in the U.S.

Before you climb up on your roof to look for signs of hail damage, check out other parts of your property. If you notice dents and dings in the siding of your home, on your deck, or on your lawn furniture, there’s a good chance it’s affected your roof as well.

Look for Debris Around Your Property

It’s also common for roofs to sustain damage after serious wind storms.

After a windy night, take a walk around your property and look for signs of debris that may have been blown around or furniture that was knocked over. If things are out of place, it’s possible your roof took a hit, too.

You also ought to check to see if any shingles were blown off your roof. That’s a major sign that the storm did some damage.

Consider Your Energy Bills

Another subtle way that you can spot damage to your roof is by taking a look at your energy bills.

If they’ve been increasing lately, it’s possible that your roof is not sealed as well as it ought to be and you’re losing heat or cool air through it.

If your energy bills are skyrocketing and you’re not sure why, you may want to have a roofing professional come out to take a look and see if roof damage is the culprit.

Check Out Your Attic

You can also look at your attic to detect damage to your roof.

If you have signs of water damage on the floor or ceiling of your attic, for example, it’s likely that there’s a leak somewhere in your roof.

If you notice evidence of little pests like termites or rodents in your attic, it’s also possible that they’re getting into your home through a crack or gap in the roof.

Have You Noticed Signs of Roof Damage?

If left unmanaged, roof damage can lead to a lot of serious and costly problems for homeowners.

To avoid having to pay a fortune to replace your roof, it’s important to inspect on a regular basis and get help for any damage you notice right away.

If there was a bad storm where I lived, I would for sure want to get my roof inspected. No sense in ignoring it to where there could be damage unseen. I’d see about taking your advice and getting the whole thing professinally inspected and then if needed, repaired.
